Because of their high efficacy and barrier to resistance, entecavir and tenofovir are recommended for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B patients with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. Although these drugs have few side effects in patients with normal liver function, little is known about the side effect profiles in patients with impaired liver function. Dr. Tram Tran discusses the occurrence of lactic acidosis in a series of chronic hepatitis B patients with impaired liver function being treated with entecavir.
