Projects In Knowledge is pleased to present Caring for Oncology Patients: Tips and Tools for Managing Targeted Therapy, a free CME/CE program for oncologists, nurses, and pharmacists.
With the addition of targeted therapies to the armamentarium of oncology treatments, clinicians are facing new challenges in monitoring their patients and managing their care. An overarching challenge relates to management of side effects seen with these newer drugs because they differ from adverse events associated with traditional cancer therapies.
Appropriate interventions to detect, identify, and manage these events can reduce the severity of symptoms, enhance adherence to cancer therapy regimens, and potentially improve patient survival and quality of life. Therefore, it is increasingly important for oncologists, nurses, and pharmacists to have a good understanding of targeted agents and how to manage their associated side effects.
The curriculum offered in this CME/CE program promises to be a timely and continuously updated source of practical information that can be immediately used in treating, monitoring, and managing side effects in cancer patients receiving targeted therapy.

Curriculum Overview: |
- Molecular basis for the development of side effects with targeted therapies
- Differentiating side effects of traditional oncology agents from those of targeted therapies
- Proactive screening and monitoring for side effects of targeted therapies
- In-depth review of side effects of targeted therapies–by drug and by targeted therapy class
- Prevention and management of side effects of targeted therapies
- Considerations for managing side effects of targeted therapies used in combination-targeted therapy regimens
- Assessing drug-drug interactions with targeted therapies
- Controversies in targeted therapy side-effect management
- Role of patient education—monitoring side effects and adherence
- Promoting and measuring adherence
|
Learning Objectives:
- Assess the molecular basis of targeted therapy side effects to monitor for their onset and to successfully manage them to improve patients' QOL.
- Differentiate between side effects of traditional oncology therapies vis-รก-vis targeted therapies, to proactively monitor these side effects and ensure early intervention, to minimize side effects and improve adherence.
- Evaluate current controversies and treatment regimens for preventing and managing side effects of targeted therapies to formulate practical strategic interventions (supportive and pharmacologic) that reflect the most up-to-date science and insights, and improve patient outcomes.
