The disease burden of mood disorders goes far beyond clinical sequelae resulting from psychiatric symptoms and associated dysfunction. Medical illnesses associated with depression are well documented across multiple body systems while associations between medical illness and bipolar disorders are still emerging.
Key challenges for busy psychiatrists include improving patients' psychosocial behavior and quality of life, formulating treatment strategies aimed at increasing response rates and remission, and assessing potential pharmacotherapeutic adverse events inherent in complex treatment regimens.
