Controversies in Management of HBV: Lessons from Case Studies

In this interactive CD-ROM, clinicians will apply knowledge of epidemiology, natural history, virology, and treatment to case studies representing the complex presentations and histories seen in today's clinical practice. In the course of a clinician's day, not all decision points have obvious answers. Neither will the decision points in these case studies. Our faculty panel will use these cases and decision points to discuss the controversies of HBV management. Issues will include: risk factors for progression of disease and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); immunosuppression; inactive carriers; posttreatment reactivation of infection; end-stage liver disease and liver transplant; durability of response; viral variants; liver biopsy; pregnancy and prevention of maternal transmission; and endpoints of therapy.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This interactive CD-ROM is designed for gastroenterologists, hepatologists, and other clinicians who care for patients with hepatitis B infection or those at increased risk for acquiring the infection.

ACTIVITY GOAL
The goal of Controversies in Management of HBV: Lessons from Case Studies is to examine current and emerging strategies for diagnosing and treating patients infected with HBV.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  • Identify patients at risk for HBV infection and risk factors for disease progression and HCC, including the significance of a positive family history.

  • Incorporate viral factors, such as e-antigen status, and patient factors, such as immunocompetence, into individualized treatment plans.

  • Utilize endpoint measurements to guide ongoing treatment decisions, including decisions to stop therapy.

  • Discuss the risk of posttreatment disease flares and implement appropriate prevention and monitoring strategies.

  • Manage HBV infection during pregnancy to reduce the risk of maternal transmission.

  • Recognize and manage the long-term sequelae of untreated HBV infection, including end-stage liver disease.
